Day 41 / Captieux -Bostens / 44.1 km

Last night I went early to bed after taking a paracetamol, a throat pastille and rubbing my right foot with Voltaren gel. My Australian compagnon informed me he was an early bird so I did not bother to close the shutters. 6.30 seems the hour people get up down under. I get up as well, dress and go to the bakery for breakfeast and lunch. The bar-tabac is open and I have a coffee. I’m ready to go around 8.15. The day will be around 45 km straight ahead running with little or no bends. My throat feels ok. My right feet does not argue as I have silenced it with some Ibuprofen. I run 35 km straight ahead until afternoon with little stops or bends. One of the stops is to change my long running pants for a running short. Another stop is to say hello to a Dutch couple who are walking from Lourdes direction Vézelay. Most of the stops are to take pictures. Always ahead.

In Roquefort I have my lunch break. a Vidal is open. I indulge myself with a rice pudding, clementines, and Milka chocolat. Roquefort is not the Roquefort cheese village. Roquefort is the let me sleep village. A few kilometers before Roquefort my right feet started nagging again for which I took some painkillers, after lunch they seem to kick in and I run the last 8 km to the Refuge which is located in the middle of a forest next to a goat farm producing cheese.

On the way I pass a palombiere which Is photogenic (e.g visible enough).

I arrive at the gite around 15.00. If a Michelin guide would exist for Piligrim refuges/gites this one would be a 3 star. Great location, modern, clean, all the amenities a pilgrim needs (even a drying machine) in the bathroom I find perfume... I install myself, have a shower (I do not use the perfume)and relax in the sun. Around 19.00 a volunteer (Francois) brings dinner :salade nicoise, wine, bread, chicken and super pineapple dessert. The dinner is great. Everything is “donativo”, which means you give what you want/can give. The goat cheese from the farm which I added to the salad is nice as well.  The only improvement I see is to have some powersockets next to the beds. The cat from the goat farm comes to keep me company. Not a bad day at all.

Lessons learned :
- You have gites and you have GITES.
- I think it’s difficult to be gay in the Landes. Everything is just straight (I know it’s a very poor joke).
- Amazing what volunteers (can) do.
